Riverdale writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, who is also known for his work on Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is working on a new PLL spin-off series, Variety confirmed.
The new version of the teen mystery drama, which originally ran from 2010 to 2017, will reportedly feature a new story and new characters.
News of the reboot sparked a mixed reaction from fans of PLL, many of whom questioned the need for another reboot when the last one, The Perfectionists, was cancelled less than a year ago.
“I can’t believe companies are so out of ideas that they have the NEED to reboot Pretty Little Liars,” one wrote.
Another fan page tweeted: “Here’s the thing. PLL only ended three years ago and TP was axed a year ago. It’s way, way too soon to do a reboot or revival.”
“I’m sorry but who’s idea was it for another Pretty Little Liars reboot,” another wrote. “Let it rest in peace PLEASE don’t dig it up again it already had a hard enough life.”
“You mean to tell me that they cancelled f***ing Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, but make a Season 5 of Riverdale [and] a Pretty Little Liars Reboot that NO ONE asked for? Make it make sense,” one Twitter user said.
Pretty Little Liars told the story of four teenage girls who start receiving mysterious letters addressed from an unknown “A” after their best friend Alison goes missing.
The show ran for seven seasons and starred Lucy Hale, Troian Bellisario, Ashley Benson and Shay Mitchell.
Hale, who played Aria Montgomery, worked with Aguirre-Sacasa on Riverdale spin-off Katy Keene, which was cancelled in July after just one season.
