Good Morning Britain host Piers Morgan has claimed he was approached in the street by an elderly woman and chastised for his criticism of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

The duke and duchess of Sussex are set to feature on TV later today (7 March) in the US, after recording an in-depth interview with Oprah Winfrey.

The special, which will air in the UK on ITV on Monday 8 March, will be their first full sit-down interview since stepping down from their duties as senior royals in March 2020.

Morgan has criticised the royal couple several times in recent weeks on his ITV morning show.

Writing for his column in the Daily Mail, Morgan described walking out in public with X Factor host Simon Cowell: “Every few minutes, people approached us for a socially-distanced selfie, or a quick chat.

“Some were funny. ‘You annoyed me so much with what you said about Meghan this morning!’ an elderly lady scolded me.”

However, the former News of the World editor noted that the woman was “laughing” while she “scolded” him, and seemed to take it in good humour.

Earlier this week, Markle’s former Suits co-star Patrick J Adams gave an impassioned defence of Markle on social media, describing her as “enthusiastic, kind, cooperative, giving, joyful and supportive”.

His comments came after Buckingham Palace announced it was launching a probe into allegations of bullying made against the duchess by former members of staff.

Meghan’s spokesperson said in a statement the duchess “is saddened by this latest attack on her character, particularly as someone who has been the target of bullying herself and is deeply committed to supporting those who have experienced pain and trauma”.
