Welch appeared on the breakfast show on Friday morning (4 September) to call out what she perceives as “fearmongering” by the press in its coverage of Covid-19.
“If you’re going to frighten us with how many are dying every day,” argued the former Coronation Street star, “please enlighten us and tell us how things have improved, tell us when no one is dying. I will do anything to help balance the fearmongering.”
She also condemned the government for continuing to “prioritise” coronavirus and claimed people with other illnesses are not going to hospital to receive treatment because of this.
Morgan, who presents Good Morning Britain on the same channel, tweeted his dismay at Welch’s view. “Dumb, deluded & dangerous Covid-deniers like Denise Welch need to stop being given airtime,” he wrote.
“Her idiotic, ill-informed ramblings – from a woman who never stops telling us that she suffers from mental illness – will cost lives by persuading people to think the virus isn’t a threat.”
While there was a considerable online backlash to Welch's TV appearance, many also supported her argument, with one Twitter user writing: "Anyone criticising Denise Welch this morning has never had mental illness or anxiety and doesn’t understand it. For those who have, she is wonderful and I totally understand why she is so het up about it. Go Denise. If you haven’t had mental illness be grateful."
