From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

This Morning host Phillip Schofield has described the moment he came out as gay to his wife Stephanie Lowe’s parents.

Schofield publicly revealed that he is gay earlier this year while speaking on the popular ITV talk show.

Speaking to Chris Evans on the How to Wow podcast, the presenter described the “big support” he had received from his in-laws.

“Just before Christmas, well during Christmas, I was cleaning – I clean when I’m stressed, I tidy up – so I was cleaning a surface at Christmas, wiping it down and Jill, my wonderful mother-in-law, said, ‘You are the perfect man, you know’,” he said.

“And I just said, ‘No Jill, no I’m not,’ but it was the sweetest thing to say. So yeah, big support from them.”

Schofield also passed on the message he had been given by his father-in-law after he came out.

“I may be your pa-in-law,” read the message, “but think of me as your surrogate pa, and long may it continue. As long as Steph’s OK we don’t have a problem.”

After Schofield told his father-in-law he was “very deeply sorry to disappoint” him, he then replied: “Nothing to be sorry for here son, so cheer up!”

“I couldn’t have wanted anything else really,” added Schofield, who recently stated that he and Lowe plan to remain married.
