From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Peter Kay has written a new heartfelt sketch for his beloved comedy series Car Share.

The comedian donated the new piece to a tribute book for the NHS titled 100 Stories to Say Thank You.

In the piece, Kay’s character John reunites with his supermarket colleague Kayleigh (Sian Gibson) to discuss a cancer scare and brain scan he once had.

He also runs through the organisation of his father’s end-of-life care.

“I went for a brain scan once,” he tells Kayleigh. “It was years ago – I kept getting these really bad headaches.”

He says that after his GP told him it was his “sinuses”, he booked in for an MRI.

John then says he asked the nurse to play Simon & Garfunkel song “The Sound of Silence” and was left shaken by the lyric: “Silence like a cancer grows".

“I was in tears – I was ashen when I came out,” he says, before revealing his GP was correct; it had been his sinuses the entire time.

The sketch appears in the book that’s been curated by Adam Kay. It is designed to shine a spotlight on the NHS workers who have been working tirelessly throughout the coronavirus pandemic,

Other celebrities to have contributed include Emma Thompson, Dermot O’Leary, and Ricky Gervais.

Yesterday (10 August), a Car Share scene did the rounds on Twitter following a BBC weather blunder that saw presenter Carol Kirkwood accidentally say “doggers” instead of “joggers” on live television.

The beloved BBC sitcom ran for two series and drew to a close in 2017, leaving fans heartbroken with its downbeat ending.

Bolton-hailing comedian Kay confirmed on BBC Radio Manchester that there will be no more episodes of Car Share whether in the form of a Christmas special or a third series.

“You’ve got to get out while the going’s good. No Christmas special, no.”
