From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Earlier this month, two new episodes of Peter Kay’s Car Share were screened at a charity event, the comedian making a rare public appearance at the Blackpool event.

Kay has since confirmed that both episodes will be broadcast by the BBC, the first – a one-off unscripted episode – showing on 7 May at 10pm on BBC One.

“The episode is completely improvised,” reads a statement. “Then a full second series repeat of Car Share on Monday nights will conclude with a brand-new series finale to be screened on the second Bank Holiday, 28 May.”

Fans lucky enough to see the unscripted episode at the Blackpool screening reportedly branded it “pure genius”. Kay stars in the Bafta-winning comedy series alongside Sian Gibson.

Kay previously cancelled all upcoming projects “due to unforeseen family circumstances”.

“My sincerest apologies,” the Bolton comedian said at the time. “This decision has not been taken lightly and I’m sure you’ll understand my family must always come first.

“I’ve always endeavoured to protect my family’s privacy from the media. I hope that the media and public will continue to respect our privacy at this time. Once again I’m very sorry.”

The 44-year-old’s last tour – which started in 2010 – quickly became the highest selling comedy tour of all time, playing to over 1.2 million people.

Since then, Kay has played a character in ITV’s Cradle to Grave and cameoed in Inside No 9.
