A new TV series based on the Percy Jackson novels is in development at Disney+.

Ten years after the book series was first adapted for film in Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief, author Rick Riordan shared the news of a new adaptation on Twitter, in a video titled: “Pssst. Hey, demigods…”

“After a lot of hard work and a lot of support from you guys, Percy Jackson is coming to Disney+,” the American writer said.

In an accompanying statement, he wrote: “We can’t say much more at this stage but we are very excited about the idea of a live-action series of the highest quality, following the storyline of the original Percy Jackson five-book series, starting with The Lightning Thief in season one. Rest assured that [my wife] Becky & I will be involved in person in every aspect of the show.”

The five-book series tells the story of Percy, a teenage boy who finds out that he’s the child of a human mother and the Greek god Poseidon.

The first book was originally adapted for screen in 2010, with Logan Lerman playing the titular hero and Pierce Brosnan, Sean Bean and Alex Daddario also starring.

A second film was released in 2013, with the series grossing over $425 million worldwide but receiving a lukewarm critical response for being “unfaithful” to Riordan’s writing.

Actor Lerman, who was only 18 when he played the demi-god, shared his excitement at the prospect of the film being remade, tweeting: “Excited to see this! Hope it gets the adaptation the books deserve. Congrats @rickriordan.”
