From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Actor Paula Williamson, who starred in Coronation Street and married criminal Charles Bronson, has been found dead.

She was found on Monday morning at a house in Sneyd Green, Stoke-on-Trent.

A statement from the Staffordshire Police read: “A woman from Stoke-on-Trent who was found dead this morning has been named as Paula Williamson, aged 38.

“Paula’s body was found in a house on Gordon Avenue, Sneyd Green, at around 7am.

“A post mortem will take place to establish the cause of death but the death is not being treated as suspicious. A report is now being prepared for the Coroners.

“Next of kin have been informed. The family have asked for their right to privacy to allow them to grieve at this difficult time.”

Williamson starred in Coronation Street as a nurse in three episodes between 2008 and 2012, and also appeared in the 2011 Fred and Rose West drama Appropriate Adult.

The actor married Bronson, who has been described as “Britain’s most violent criminal”, in 2017 while he was behind bars in HMP Wakefield. After a short marriage, Bronson filed for divorce in 2018.

During a tearful appearance on Loose Women last summer, Williamson said she was “heartbroken” to have been filed divorce papers by Bronson. Last July, she told the Sunday Mirror: “This relationship has driven me to the brink and I have been so low that I have even thought about taking my own life.

“I have been used and controlled from behind bars as he has poked fun at my weight and told me I am an embarrassment.”

Yesterday, The Sun published a report revealing that Bronson plans to marry a woman named Joan when he is released
