From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Following a rousing speech at the Golden Globes, the world began hoping Oprah Winfrey would run for President of the United States.
However, on multiple occasions, the entrepreneur, broadcaster, and actor has denied the public, saying she would only run for office if she received a message from God.
Appearing on Stephen Colbert’s late night show, Oprah re-enforced those comments once more, but this time there was a catch.
“Oprah, Stephen, what’s up!” said a booming voice during the segment. Above them, on the roof of the Ed Sullivan Theatre, a projection of the Lord.
“I’m a huge fan,” God said of Oprah, to which she replied: “That’s great to hear, I’m a big fan of yours too, God, I really am.”
“Wow, Oprah knows who I am?” He said back. “I can’t wait to tell Jesus. I'm going to look so cool!” God then gave Oprah a sign, quite literally, holding up a sign with the word 'run' on it.
"All I can tell you God is that 'run' is now a part of my exercise routine," to which God responded: "How can I make this clearer - Oprah 2020, yes she can!" Watch the segment below, God coming in around the 4:30 mark.
Recently, Oprah said of running for President: "I’ve always felt very secure and confident with myself in knowing what I could do and what I could not. And so it’s not something that interests me. I don’t have the DNA for it... that’s not for me."
