Nick Clegg has accepted a challenge to appear on television show The Last Leg as part of a quest to convince one of its presenters to vote.

The Deputy Prime Minister said he would happily face being pelted with space hoppers as part of the Channel 4 comedy show.

He was the only politician to respond to a challenge to poll presenter Alex Brooker but the video he initially sent in was not enough.

Mr Clegg appealed to the presenter to vote in May’s general election to “celebrate democracy” and hold politicians to account.

But the clip was only partially aired on Friday night’s episode before host Adam Hills cut it off saying it “wasn’t good enough”.

“We said you actually have to come in here in person and convince Alex,” he added.

Minutes later, the announcement came through to Hills that the Liberal Democrat leader had accepted the challenge on Twitter.

“Challenge accepted. I'll dodge the space hoppers and see you on the sofa then,” he wrote.

The audience cheered the announcement as the presenters sat in shock.

"Now Nick Clegg has not just agreed to debate with Alex," Josh Widdicombe noted. "He's agreed to play a game where we all throw space hoppers at him."

“I feel a bit bad now,” Brooker mused.

The prospect of Mr Clegg appearing on a comedy show in front of a live audience delighted Twitter.

Viewers could not decide whether it would be “car crash television” or an endearing move by the struggling politician, but seemed eager to watch either way.
