Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Netflix cemented itself as a major player at the 2015 SAG Awards last night, with House of Cards and OITNB picking up their first Screen Actors Guild prizes.

Kevin Spacey (not in attendance) was named Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for HoC, while Uzo Aduba ensnared the award's female equivalent.

"Oh my God. I really, truly do not know what to say," she said, fighting back tears. "I just wanna say thank you so much to the Screen Actors Guild for this incredible honor. I want to thank Jenji Kohan for writing a show like this and putting something like this on television, not just for myself but for our incredible team of actors to be seen in such a beautiful way. "

OITNB also won outstanding ensemble in a comedy, while the top outstanding ensemble in a drama award went to ITV and PBS's Downton Abbey.

As for the film prizes, Eddie Redmayne, Julianne Moore, Patricia Arquette and JK Simmonds were honoured for their acting, while Birdman took away the night's biggest prize.
