From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

At this stage, it is no surprise to find out that Netflix has millions upon millions of subscribers, ending last year with a total of 74.76 million.

Just one day into the new year (1 January) the streaming service surpassed 75 million members, according to CEO Reed Hastings and CFO David Wells.

“Our quarter‐end 74.76 million members put us at over 17 million net additions for the year, showing how much the world is embracing Internet TV,” they wrote in a message (via Variety).

They also revealed that 42.5 billion hours of video was streamed in 2015. In 2014, 'only' 29 billion hours were streamed, making a year on year increase of 13.9 billion hours

Earlier this year, Netflix representatives claimed that $6 billion would be spent on original content, with 600 hours of original programming expected to launch in 2016 compared to the 450 in 2015.

“Increasingly, our goal is to own more of our original programming to allow for greater creative and business control and to ensure global access to content,” Hastings and Wells continued.

Recently, the release dates for numerous shows, including Orange is the New Black season four and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt season two were announced.
