Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Matt Smith and the Doctor Who team were the big winners at tonight's National TV Awards at London's O2 Arena. The show picked up the prize for Best Drama, with Smith's Doctor taking home the award for Best Drama Performance.

Ant & Dec enjoyed a stream of successes too, winning Best Entertainment Presenter, Best Entertainment Programme for I 'm A Celebrity...Get Me Out Of Here! and the esteemed Landmark accolade, complete with a tribute from Prince Charles.

"It still means so much to us, it's still so lovely," said Dec when accepting the award for Best Entertainment Presenter (for the millionth time).

TV Detective, a new category this year, was won by Sherlock's hero Benedict Cumberbatch, after the drama was revealed as the BBC's most popular in a decade earlier today.

Julie Hesmondhalgh won Best Serial Drama Performance for her role as Hayley Cropper in Coronation Street. The soap picked up the Best Serial Drama award too.

In the Best Talent Show category, Strictly Come Dancing beat Simon Cowell's shows The X Factor and Britain's Got Talent, with supermodel Naomi Campbell presenting the award.

Performers included The X Factor winner Sam Bailey, Nigel Harman and Abbey Clancy from Strictly Come Dancing.
