The story set to provide the basis for the fourth season of Netflix series Narcos has reportedly been decided.

New episodes are expected to focus on the Juárez Cartel, the head of which had a fleeting appearance in the show's third season after meeting Cali Cartel's Pacho Herrera.

According to the Express, season four will feature Amado Carrillo Fuentes, a Mexican drug lord who seized control of the Cartel after assassinating his boss Rafael Aguilar Guajardo.

These reports would corroborate plans to shift the show's setting to Mexico for the new season with actor Pêpê Rapazote suggesting in a recent interview the show is to go back in time to “focus on the early days” of Mexican cartels.

Earlier this year, location scout Carlos Muñoz Porta was found dead with multiple gunshot wounds in a remote area near San Bartolo Actopan, an area said to have some of Mexico's highest murder rates.

It remains unclear whether there was a motive for the murder but the incident led lead star Pedro Pascal to state the show would have to end if the cast and crew's safety couldn't be guaranteed.

The first two seasons focused on Pablo Escobar and, while creators originally designed to just focus on the drug kingpin, they decided to name the show Narcos so the series could outlive Esboar's death.
