From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. Michael Brooks, the host of political web series The Michael Books Show and The Majority Report, has died, aged 37.

The official Twitter account for the latter announced “with a heavy heart” that the political commentator died of a “sudden medical condition”.

“It is with a heavy heart that we announce the unexpected passing of Michael Brooks: a son, brother, friend and true comrade to so many, due to a sudden medical condition,” the statement read.

“Michael believed in bringing people together in the struggle for love and justice, fighting for all poor and working people, a struggle that he understood to be global. He knew the only way we could do this was by bringing people together & made his life’s work bringing people from different backgrounds and countries together.

Brooks appeared as a contributor on The Majority Report since 2013. The political listener-supported talk show, which discusses cultural issues, is released daily on platforms including YouTube, iTunes and Spotify.

As well as contributing commentary and analysis, Brooks conducted interviews with "thought leaders" in politics, economics, international relations and entertainment.

The show’s host, Sam Seder, retweeted its Twitter statement in tribute to Brooks.

Brooks also hosted The Michael Brooks Show since 2017. The entertainment series, filmed in Brooklyn, New York, saw him discuss history and politics in a satirical manner.

In his own words, the show – which had 131,000 subscribers – was "a smart, progressive, irreverent, and funny look at the politics of today".

According to its website, Brooks appeared as an analyst on Huffington Post, Al Jazeera English and several other outlets.

He also wrote two books titled Against the Web: A Cosmopolitan Answer to the New Right and The Buddha’s Playbook, which he co-wrote with Josh Summers.

The statement said that his family will announce “plans to keep his work alive by creating a foundation in his honour”, adding: “It is impossible to capture the impact he had, and he will be missed sorely.”
