Oprah Winfrey was left stunned during Meghan Markle’s sit-down interview when the Duchess of Sussex revealed that there had been conversations within the palace about “how dark” her unborn child’s “skin might be when he’s born”.

“What?” she asked. “Who is having THAT conversation... with you? What? Hold up, hold up. There’s a conversation with you...”

“With Harry,” Meghan corrected.

“About how dark your baby is going to be?”

“Potentially. And what that would mean or look like,” Meghan replied.

Viewers were likewise shocked at both the allegation and Oprah’s reaction.

“From this point Oprah Wanted to fight the royal family #OprahMeghanHarry,” wrote one viewer.

“Oprah just woke up one day and was like, ‘You know what, I'm bored. Lemme take down the British monarchy,” another said.

“Oprah bout to fight somebody her damn self,” another wrote.

“No one gives a dramatic pause like oprah thee winfrey,” another wrote.

“In those months when I was pregnant... we have in tandem the conversation of ‘He won’t be given security. He’s not going to be given a title,’ and also concerns and conversations about how dark his skin might be when he’s born,” she said during the conversation with Winfrey, which aired on CBS in the US on Sunday (7 March).

The Duchess of Sussex said she was baffled by this alleged sidelining of her future child in the royal hierarchy, and the risk a lack of security could put them in.

“We haven’t created this monster machine around us in terms of clickbait and tabloid fodder,” Meghan said. “We’ve allowed that happen, which means our son needs to be safe.”

The Independent has contacted Buckingham Palace for comment about the allegations.
