After a month of episodes, viewers tuned in on Thursday (30 September) to watch the series finale, in which the last set of couples decide if they want to renew their vows or not. It was due to be followed by an aftershow hosted by AJ Odudu.
However, due to ongoing technical problems at Channel 4, which have affected broadcasts all week, the episode did not air.
A test card appeared on the screen before a repeat of the previous episode was shown, with many viewers reporting that the screen had simply frozen. E4 then began airing a random episode of First Dates.
Fans were left frustrated by the episode not airing, with one commenting: “September 30th; the day @e4tweets broke twitter.”
“Me realising this isn’t a quick recap but in fact the same episode as last night,” one fan commented.
Another tweet read: “When twitter saves you from thinking you’re going mad… why is last night’s episode on again?”
“It’s not the episode you wanted but it’s the episode you deserve,” one commenter wrote, while another social media user said: “Anyone who watches #MAFSUK have just gone into meltdown. So funny.”
However, many joked that the commentary from other MAFS fans had been funny enough on its own, with one tweet reading: “I’d like to thank the British public on twitter, for making the last hour worth it.”
“All these tweets and memes are more entertaining than the show itself,” another said.
Channel 4 has since announced that the finale will air on tonight (1 October) at 9pm on E4, with the aftershow following at 10pm.
A Channel 4 spokesperson said: “Following the incident at the weekend, ongoing technical issues have meant that Thursday night’s episode of Married at First Sight UK was a repeat from Wednesday 29 September.
“We apologise to the fans of the show and have worked hard to get the episode to you this evening at 9pm. We hope that when you finally watch it you can find out whether Amy & Josh, Tayah & Adam and Morag & Luke renew their vows.”
Married at First Sight UK began in August and sees two complete strangers matched according to the judgement of a panel of experts. The pair marry just minutes after meeting.
After a period of living with each other, they are then given the option to continue with the relationship by renewing their vows or ending it.
