Unfortunately, the Avery case is no work of fiction, and the 53-year-old has remained in prison since 2007, having been sentenced to life imprisonment without parole.
Since the Netflix docudrama was released, however, hundreds of fans have reached out to help Avery, hoping to uncover new evidence that may free the convicted man or at least make authorities question the decision.
Recently, his new lawyer Kathleen Zellner has led the way, having told the press that new forensic evidence should prove her client's innocence. Now, Avery’s legion of armchair detectives has seemingly found a new piece of evidence.
As pointed out by Uproxx, Halbach’s death certificate is - to put it lightly - a bit of a mess. Under the ‘Body Found’ section the ‘No’ box has been ticked, yet under ‘Autopsy Performed’ the ‘Yes’ box has been ticked.
Then, under ‘Immediate Cause of Death’, the word ‘Undetermined’ has been crossed out, while homicide has been ticked.
The document itself - which you can view here - was issued 10 November, 2005, only a day after Calumet County coroner received Halbach's bone fragments; the same day after Avery was charged with murder. The report concludes is that: “it seems like the paperwork on Halbach’s death certificate was pushed through improperly so charges could be laid.
“A quick glance into how things were done show a serious lack of professional procedure being followed and a rush to shoehorn Avery as the guilty party.”
Conspirators have suggested that the paper work may have been rushed through to stop the depositions of District Attorney Denis Vogel and Sheriff Tom Kocourek, as both of them were meant to have their deposition in the days following the certificate being issued.
Meanwhile, Avery’s lawyers during the case - Dean Strang and Jerry Buting - are going on tour.
