Luther fans were left devastated after the shock death of one of its original characters.

The blow was delivered in the fifth series’s penultimate outing, which saw the fallout of Alice Morgan’s murderous actions in the previous night’s episode.

*Spoilers for episode three below*

Having discovered Alice (Ruth Wilson) killed his son, mobster George Cornelius (Patrick Malahide) sends a hitman to dispatch her and Luther (Idris Elba). The contract killer, named Mr Palmer, tracks Alice to the house of Mark North (Paul McGann), the ex-lover of Luther’s deceased wife, Zoe.

Once there, Mr Palmer phones Luther and informs him that he’s about to kill Mark. It’s here where Benny (Michael Smiley) steps forward to spare Mark’s life, with Mr Palmer firing a bullet into his face – not before Benny gives a detailed description of their captor as a helpless Luther listens on over speakerphone.

Viewers expressed their heartbreak over the latest twist on social media.

There are some fans who believe that Benny could still be alive, arguing that the blood seen spattered onto Alice’s face could belong to the hitman.

Elba recently revealed that a film version of the hit BBC series is looking ever more likely, stating: “We are really advancing on getting a movie version [of the show] up on the screen. [Creator] Neil Cross is beavering away on writing this thing, and I think the remit for the film is to scale it up.”

The series five finale airs on BBC One tonight at 9pm.
