A lawyer for the actor confirmed the actor died on Monday morning (4 February).
The news was first reported by TMZ, who say police responded to a call from St John's friend.
The friend went to check on the actor in his Los Angeles, California house, where his body was found.
Police and paramedics pronounced him dead on the scene. There was reportedly no sign of foul play.
St John played the character Neil Winters on The Young and the Restless since 1991. He earned multiple Emmy nominations and 10 NAACP Image Awards.
The actor's personal life was marked by tragedy. His son with wife and professional boxer Mia St John, Julian, took his own life in 2014 while recieving mental health treatment. The family sued the treatment centre for negligence.
