From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

It was never going to be your typical proposal, but Kanye West excelled himself in popping the question to Kim Kardashian, renting a 42,000 capacity baseball stadium and a 50-piece orchestra.

Thankfully for the rapper, Kardashian said yes and the pair are now engaged.

According to E! News, whose TV network airs the reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians, West brought their family and friends to AT&T Park, the home of the Major League Baseball team the San Francisco Giants.

To help persuade Kardashian, who turned 33 yesterday, a giant screen flashed the sign "Pleeease Marry Meee!!!" and an orchestra played Lana Del Rey's "Young and Beautiful".

The band also played "Knock You Down", a song by Keri Hilson and Ne-Yo which also features Kanye West.

The musician got down on one knee and proposed with a 15-carat diamond ring by Lorraine Schwartz.

The ballpark was completely empty, and the pair were alone until Kardashian said yes, when their nearest and dearest came out of the dugouts. Fireworks and Roman candles lit up the night sky.

Perhaps in a bid to keep the news a surprise to Kim, he presented a gong at the Hollywood Film Awards just hours before the Monday night proposal.

Sensibly, he had secured permission from the head of the Kardashian family, Kris Jenner, beforehand.

Kardashian previously married basketball star Kris Humphries in a lavish ceremony, but filed for divorce after just 72 days.

In June, Kardashian and West welcomed baby North. The child was not present at the proposal.
