On Tuesday (11 August), presumptive Democratic nominee Biden announced that Harris would be running for vice president alongside him in November’s election, making her the first black woman on a major political party’s ticket.
Presenting The Daily Show, Trevor Noah seemed impressed with Biden’s pick, joking: “Say what you want about Joe, but the man went black and he’s not going back.”
With Harris having initially run for the Democratic nomination against Biden, the South African comedian said he was impressed that Obama’s vice president had picked Harris after she “destroyed” him during one of the Democratic debates.
Noah added: “Part of me thinks he only picked her so she could never dust his a** in public again. This isn’t a VP pick, it’s an insurance policy.”
Over on The Late Show, Stephen Colbert also suggested that Harris was a “surprising” choice, given her past evisceration of Biden during the televised debates.
Discussing “just how hard she went after him, with hammer and tongs” over issues of desegregation busing and racial equality, Colbert said: “She hit him so hard, he was spitting teeth like Chiclets all over the stage.”
Meanwhile, The Tonight Show host Jimmy Fallon joked that as not only the first black woman to run for VP, but also the first woman of Indian descent, Harris was a horrifying prospect to Trump.
“Kamala is the daughter of two immigrants, she went to Howard University, she’s a Democratic senator from California,” Fallon said. “It’s an inspiring story, unless you’re Trump, then it’s a Stephen King novel.”
Announcing Harris as his running mate, Biden tweeted: “I have the great honour to announce that I’ve picked @KamalaHarris – a fearless fighter for the little guy, and one of the country’s finest public servants – as my running mate.”
The US elections will take place on 3 November, with Biden and Harris going head-to-head with current president Trump and his vice president, Mike Pence.
