Inside No 9: series 5 - trailer

Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Reece Shearsmith has revealed which Inside No 9 episode he’d like to revisit in a future series.

In an interview with The Independent ahead of series five, which began on BBC Two this week, the writer said he would be up for returning to the world of a previous episode “if we had a good idea and a reason to do it”.

Steve Pemberton added: “We wouldn’t rule that out. Definitely not. I think that’s a really interesting idea.

“[But] we felt like we were going to do another silent episode, because that went down very well, the danger is it won’t be as good as what we did the first time round.”

Shearsmith then added: “I always think you could do a whole series on the Witchfinders going around and doing trials, but that’s just me.”

The episode he’s referring to is series two episode, “The Trial of Elizabeth Gadge”, that was broadcast in 2015.

In the same interview, the writing duo also shared behind-the-scenes secrets and future plans for the anthology show.

The series five opener, titled “The Referee’s a W***er”, starred David Morrissey and Ralf Little – we gave the episode a five-star review.

Inside No 9 continues every Monday at 10pm.
