Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Why take part?: He wants to “deal with issues” ranging from a fear of creepy crawlies to an uneasiness with heights. “I am quite a fearful person underneath my tough, journalistic exterior. I have to put a stop to it and this is my decision.”

What he says: “A mate of mine is an amateur arachnologist and he has given me a link to an animated film that is apparently very good at helping people with their fear of spiders - I am going to give that a go.”

Most likely to humilate himself: Squealing at spiders and putting people in their places.

Phobias: As above, Matthew is "absolutely terrified" of spiders. "You have never seen anyone quite as frightened as me."

Ideal campsite comrade: Keith Richards, Kate Moss or Cara Delevingne. Sinitta and Helen Flanagan can stay away, he says.

Looking forward to: Conquering his fears and enjoying the great outdoors. Matthew has been out in the woods with Ray Mears and his a keen fly-fisher, so he should enjoy jungle life.

Odds of a jungle romance?: Matthew is married to wife Amelia.
