In a crushing blow to hit series Homecoming, it’s been reported that Julia Roberts won’t be returning for the second season.

The actor, who earned a Golden Globe nomination for her lead role as Heidi Bergman, will instead remain on board as an executive producer.

Roberts had initially been coy to discuss her role in season two when speaking to Entertainment Weekly, saying: “I don’t know if I’m at liberty to share that.”

Now, a source has announced that her time as Heidi is done, despite creators Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg ensuring fans that “the story continues” in what is expected to be the show’s final season.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roberts was only committed to one season. Homecoming, while based on a Gimlet Media podcast, will deviate from its source material in season two. Director Sam Esmail (Mr Robot) said: “We have a very different trajectory for our show.”

It’s unknown whether Roberts’s co-stars Stephan James, Sissy Spacek and Shea Whigham will return, although the first season’s post-credits sequence appeared to confirm that Bobby Cannavale and Hong Chau will continue.
