From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Former Home and Away star Jessica Falkholt is fighting for her life after a triple-fatal head-on-collision in Australia.

The actor, aged 29, is in critical condition alongside her 21-year-old sister Annabelle following the crash which saw them lose both their parents on Boxing Day morning (26 December). A 50-year-old man driving another vehicle was also killed in an incident police say was caused by one car being on the wrong side of the road.

According to ABC News, onlookers immediately rushed to free the passengers on the Princes Highway at Mondayong in the South Coast, a region in the Australian state of New South Wales.

Falkholt appeared in the long-running soap as Hope Morrison in 2016.

Following the tragedy, NSW police have issued a warning to drivers about “fatigue and complacency” with the state's road accident fatality toll rising to 873 for 2017 - up 12 from the same time last year.

NSW Police Chief Inspector Phil Brooks said: “More than half of these have involved single vehicle run-offs either into a tree or a telegraph pole - sadly killing that driver and/or their passenger - which is an indicator to us that fatigue is the most likely outcome in these very sad and tragic events this close to Christmas.”

Both Jessica and Annabelle Falkholt remain in hospital with family by their sides.
