The sponsorship credits during Downton Abbey breached broadcasting rules, the regulator has found. Ofcom found that the mini-dramas for Aviva Income Protection, aired with the second series of the ITV1 drama, contained "advertising messages". Rules forbid the credits from containing such messages, and they are not counted towards the amount of airtime that a broadcaster can use for ads.
