Last night's episode of the US series – season 15 episode 15 – saw it become the longest-running prime time medical drama in the US, overtaking previous victor, ER.
The episode, titled “We Didn’t Start the Fire”, brings the show's overall tally to 332.
Grey’s Anatomy, which stars Ellen Pompeo, will extend its reign thanks to an already confirmed season 16, which will begin later this year. Season 17 is expected to be announced by ABC soon.
“We’re thrilled with Grey’s performance,” network president Karey Burke recently confirmed at the Television Critics Association (TCA). “I was visiting the set earlier this week [and] I believe the status is that we’re in conversations about continuing the show.”
ER, which starred Anthony Edwards, George Clooney and Julianne Margulies, ran for 15 seasons between 1994 and 2009.
The overall record is held by BBC series Casualty, which has aired in the UK since 1986. Its current episode count sits at more than 1,100 episodes.
Burke recently revealed that she "dreams" of rebooting ABC show Lost.
