From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Bake Off eliminee Linda Rayfield has written a heartwarming open letter about her time on the show.

Rayfield was sent home at the end of last night’s episode (20 October) following a disastrous week of bakes, but left a sweet farewell to her fellow contestants.

In her open letter, which was released on Twitter, Rayfield wrote: “Hello everyone, where does one start, Rowan would say. I love him so much!

“It’s always great meeting new people and being part of the GBBO family this year has to be one of the best experiences of my life. I’m in awe at Love [Productions] managing to make the programme under the circumstances and wanted to say a ‘big thank you!’ for looking after me so well.”

She continued: “I’ve felt so valued throughout this experience and have met some lovely people. Everything I’ve read about the show has been amazing and I’m so proud to have been part of GBBO 2020. Thank you Everyone for your lovely comments. I’m really excited to see who wins! Scream!”

Rayfield struggled through what would become her final episode of the show, coming last in the creme patisserie technical, and then leaving judges Prue Leith and Paul Hollywood disappointed with her show-stopper. A planned “caged tart” cracked and broke shortly before it was presented to the pair.

After being eliminated, Rayfield called her time on Bake Off “one of the highlights of my life” and compared the famous Bake Off tent to Disneyland.

The Great British Bake Off continues on Tuesday nights on Channel 4.
