Great British Bake Off: Mary Berry finally reveals her thoughts on the new series
'Remember, they’ve watched, I would think, seven series, most of them. So they’re bound to have upped their game and practised like mad'

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.
Your support makes all the difference.Though Channel 4's take on The Great British Bake Off largely received a warm reaction, outside of the more nostalgic viewer still pining for Mel and Sue, we'd yet to hear the judgement that really counts: Mary Berry's.
It seemed like the former judge wasn't actually so keen to discover what had happened to the beloved baking competition, telling the Daily Express that she'd been "dining out" when the first episode aired, though she had every intention to catch up.
Fast forward to nearly a week later, when HuffPost UK caught up with Berry on the red carpet at the TV Choice Awards on Monday night, asking whether she'd had a chance to watch the show and what her own thoughts were.
Her wonderfully diplomatic answer? All Berry had to say in response was: "It’s followed the same format, and it’s going to be brilliant."
When it came to the brand new crop of bakers, she stated, "Remember, they’ve watched, I would think, seven series, most of them. So they’re bound to have upped their game and practised like mad. That’s how they got there."
That's a thumbs up from the old guard then, though the Channel 4 series will have to deal with the huge drop in viewing figures it suffered in transferring the show from the BBC, with a drop of almost four million compared to the previous series premiere.
