From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

An IT programmer manager, a molecular biologist, and a former Royal Artillery officer — where else could you find such a diverging group of professionals on TV as within the Great British Bake Off tent?

Channel 4 has revealed the 12 contestants hoping to win this year’s competition, featuring the oldest baker to date, a 71-year-old retiree who lost her husband two years ago.

So, who are each of these fine new bakers? Flick through the gallery below for more information on each person.

While many critics have feared the new hosts — Prue Leith, Sandi Toksvig and Noel Fielding — may overshadow the newcomers, Paul Hollywood has put those fears to rest, calling them "the strongest contestants we've ever had.”

Last year, controversy was abound when Channel 4 purchased the acclaimed baking show, many fearing adverts (and the new hosts) could ruin everything.

However, reviews have been posted by various publications, many praising the new hosts, particularly Fielding. The new series begins Tuesday, 29 August at 8pm.
