Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Soggy bottoms, creative cakes and terrible puns returned last night as a fresh batch of contestants entered the Great British Bake Off tent.

Mary Berry and Paul Hollywood were as firm in their merciless judgements as ever, with leaver Claire’s protestations that her chocolate orange swiss roll was not too strong in flavour falling on deaf ears.

But what did the 7.5 million viewers in tuned in last night make of this oh-so-English show?

The contestants will have to ignore any mean online comments regardless, after they were warned not to take part in any 'negative exchanges' on social media.

Last year's finalist Ruby Tandoh was called a "filthy slag" by one Twitter user. The UCL student responded by hitting back with "bitter old witch" and branding Raymond Blanc an "idiot".

So here's what you all made of the first new episode's "big warm blanket of comfort":
