Geordie Shore depicts the city of Newcastle’s young people as airheaded hedonists with the sexual decorum of bonobo chimps, The Independent’s TV critic once remarked.

But now filming of the MTV reality show has been suspended after two female cast-members were arrested having allegedly been involved in a late-night bar fight.

The women, who have since been "removed" from the show, were held by police following events which took place while a new episode of the television show was being filmed, producers said.

Vicky Pattison, 25, from Newcastle, and Holly Hagan, 20, from Thornaby, Teesside, were held for questioning after an 18-year-old was assaulted and taken to hospital in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

The incident happened inside trendy Florita's Bar in Collingwood Street, Newcastle.

The programme-makers announced that filming had been temporarily suspended and the two women will be removed from the show "for the time being".

A spokeswoman for the show said: "Following an incident during filming that has led to a police enquiry into an alleged offence by a member of the cast, MTV and Lime Pictures have temporarily suspended filming of Geordie Shore series 7 pending further enquiries.

"The decision has already been taken to remove certain cast-members from the production process for the time being."

Northumbria Police has appealed for any witnesses to come forward.

A spokesman said: "An 18-year-old woman was taken to the RVI (Royal Victoria Infirmary) for treatment and has now been released.

"Two women aged 25 and 20 have been arrested on suspicion of assault and are helping police with enquiries.

"Enquiries are ongoing and anyone with information about the incident is asked to contact police on 101 ext 69191 or ring Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111."
