From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. Gavin & Stacey is officially returning for a reunion episode 10 years after it ended.

The news was revealed by James Corden who announced the special will air this Christmas, bringing back co-writer and star Ruth Jones, Mathew Horne, Joanna Page and Rob Brydon.

Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman and Melanie Walters will also return for the new episode. Gavin & Stacey first aired on BBC Three in 2007 and ended with its third series on New Year’s Day in 2010.

But what was occurrin’ with the characters the last time we saw them? Below is the refresher you need.

The beloved sitcom ended as the wedding day of Nessa (Jones) and Dave Coaches (Steffan Rhodri) arrived – only to be gatecrashed by Smithy (Corden) who objected; he believes Nessa is only marrying Dave so that their baby has a father, but he assures her he can assume that role if she wants him to.

The drama comes to a head when Dave, who admits he always knew deep down that Nessa never loved him, accepts they’re not meant to be and leaves after shaking her hand.

Six months later, Nessa and baby Neil are living in Barry Island with Smithy while Stacey (Page) is expecting her first baby with Gavin (Horne).

Speaking about the special, Corden said: “We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.”

Gavin & Stacey will return for a one-off special this Christmas on BBC One.
