From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.
At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.
The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. The pair wrote and starred in the hit BBC Three sitcom together from 2007 to 2010, which returned for a one-off special in 2019.
In the years since, Jones has continued acting and working as an author, while Corden moved to the US to present The Late Late Show.
Speaking to The Sunday Telegraph, Jones admitted that she and Corden had talked on Zoom a few times in lockdown, but “didn’t do any writing” as they both felt “uncreative”.
She continued: “Since then we’ve not even mentioned work, just talked about the family and how we’re feeling. It does seem like a waste doesn’t it, not to have spent all those lockdown hours writing? But I just couldn’t get into the groove.”
However, the Welsh actor revealed that she has since got back into writing and will write with Corden again in the future.
“It may not be Gavin & Stacey, but it’ll be something,” she said.
Returning on Christmas Day 2019, the Gavin & Stacey special was the most watched TV episode of the decade after 11.6 million people tuned in.
The episode’s cliffhanger final scene, which saw Nessa (Jones) propose to Smithy (Corden), won the Must-See Moment award at the 2020 TV Baftas.
Since then, the cast have been asked whether the show would come back with more episodes, with actor Larry Lamb, who plays Mick Shipman, saying that the comedy would return.
“I think it would be pretty cruel to leave us on that cliffhanger,” Lamb said. “After the response it got at Christmas, you can more or less be certain that, sooner or later, there will be more.
“I’m sure the BBC can persuade Ruth and James to write more, so it’s a question of when, not if.”
