A post shared last night (14 April) on the show’s official Twitter page read: “Winter is coming.”
The fantasy series will celebrate its 10-year anniversary on Saturday (17 April) and fans are hoping that the mysterious tweet may suggest that the show’s widely disparaged eighth and final season will be remade.
“God I hope that Game of Thrones post means they’re remaking the last season,” wrote one person on Twitter. “It was so bad that the show went from a pop culture phenomenon to nobody talks about it anymore.”
Another user asked: “Does that mean you finally agreed to remake the last season?” while someone else wrote: “Oooh Game of Thrones remake of season 8?”
“For you guys’ sake, this better be a tease for a remake of Season 8. Otherwise you might not get the excitement you’re looking for,” commented a third person.
Referring to the recently released Zack Snyder’s Justice League, which was the result of a long-running fan campaign, one person added: “HBO remade Justice League, they can 1000% remake Game of Thrones.”
“Sure hope this means a remake,” added someone else.
Others, however, were more doubtful. One person wrote: “Why would they remake season 8? It will just be the announcement for a collector’s box or something like that.”
“Wait, there are still people pushing for a remake of Season 8 of Game of Thrones? Seriously? Move on, people,” commented another user.
In the wake of Game of Thrones’s conclusion in 2019, an online petition calling for the show’s creators to remake its final season reached almost 2 million signatures.
The prequel spin-off series House of the Dragon is expected to arrive next year.
