There's probably a reason why we weren't shown it

Game of Thrones is gearing up to an end with what’s sure to be a devastating final three episodes.

Fans have been endlessly speculating what could happen in the HBO show’s finale, especially considering the majority of the show’s ensemble made it out of the Battle of Winterfell alive.

There’s no doubt that there’ll be plenty of twists doled out before the credits roll on the last ever episode and one character who will probably have a big part to play in how the Iron Throne contest goes down is Tyrion Lannister (Peter Dinklage).

Tyrion has had a tumultuous few seasons. After being suspected of killing Joffrey (Jack Gleeson) in the show’s fourth run, he escaped King’s Landing and pledged fealty to Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke) with whom he’s been alongside ever since.

Despite being the Hand of the Queen, the pair have had their fair share of run-ins forcing the Dragon Queen to question Tyrion’s capability as well as loyalty.

The question of whether Tyrion truly thinks Daenerys is the right person to rule Westeros is an interesting one. It seems his desire to see her on the Iron Throne is based purely on the fact that he believes she’s the rightful heir – but if he was to learn of Jon Snow’s heritage, it could be that Tyrion shifts his allegiance.

So far, only Sam (John Bradley), Jon (Kit Harington), Daenerys and Bran (Isaac Hempstead-Wright) know. But, one Reddit user has highlighted a scene from episode two – “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms” – in which Tyrion, on the eve of the battle, engaged in a catch-up conversation with Bran about his journey from young Stark boy to Three-Eyed Raven.

While fans were frustrated we weren’t privy to their chat, it could be that we were kept from seeing it for a reason: because Bran told Tyrion about Jon’s Targaryen heritage.

“Bran told Tyrion who Jon actually is and it will be the driving force behind him switching sides,” the theory goes. “A lot of us couldn’t see Jon releasing the information on his own to get the throne. What if Tyrion tells the world that Jon is the true heir because he doubts Daenerys’ intentions or honour! This would force Jon into a situation of conflict.”

This suggests that Tyrion could drive a wedge in Daenerys’ plans in a pretty big way. Backing up this theory is a strange interaction between Bran and Tyrion in the season eight premiere – Tyrion catches Bran staring at him from afar, clearly knowing what part he has to play in the show’s climactic events.

With Jorah gone, Daenerys’ allies are shrinking – and should everyone learn of Jon’s heritage, her claim to the Iron Throne would all but evaporate. Tyrion possessing this knowledge would change the game immeasurably.
