The first reactions to the Game of Thrones season 8 premiere reveal some details of what to expect when the show returns next weekend.

The cast and crew gathered in New York for the first showing of the final batch of episodes before the HBO series draws to a close in May.

Reporters were also in attendance and, while remaining tight-lipped about specific plot twists, some shared a general idea about what occurs in the show's first instalment since August 2017.

Entertainment Weekly's James Hibberd said the return was "fantastic" and teased "reunions" and "epic sequences". He added: "Major stuff happens in deeply satisfying ways." However, according to The Telegraph, the opener contains "no epic battles or large-scale set pieces".

Some Twitter users also naughtily shared a look at the opening title sequence, which has been updated to reflect changes within the show.

You can find a rundown of every character – from worst to best – below.

The final season of Game of Thrones reaches TV screens 14 April. The show will be available on Sky Atlantic and NOW TV in the UK. Read everything you need to know about the forthcoming season here.
