From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Season six of Game of Thrones is drawing ever nearer, with the series’ cast seemingly revealing more plot details every day.

With Jon Snow’s resurrection currently the main talking point, everything Melisandre actor Carice van Houten says is being analysed with a fine-toothed comb (especially now the first episode title has been revealed to be ‘The Red Woman’).

So, what will her future role entail? Well, beforehand, Melisandre has always been tough as nails, devoted in her mission to serve the Lord of Light, even if that meant sacrificing innocent children or giving birth to shadow demons.

But now, with Stannis dead and the battle lost, she’s shaken. “We see somebody whose whole belief system is tumbling down,” Houten said if her upcoming story arc (via EW).

“She’s completely confused, and I really like to play that. After all the security and strength and pride, now we see something completely different. I’ve been really waiting for this moment.”

Liam Cunningham, who plays The Onion Knight, previously spoke of his character and The Red Woman forming some kind of alliance over their shared loss. Both also believe Jon Snow to be a good man and it will be interesting to see how their strange relationship plays out.
