The 42-second clip points out that Thrones will be the first television show in history to appear in the format, before recalling footage from final season four episodes “The Watchers on the Wall” and “The Children”.
These dramatic shows will air first, before the world premiere of an exclusive season five preview is presented to the audience.
A sneak peek in this teaser sees a dishevelled and distinctly unhappy-looking Tyrion tumble from a wooden crate and stare out angrily. He was last seen escaping Kings Landing as a fugitive in last year’s dramatic finale.
Anyone hoping to catch the hit HBO fantasy at IMAX can do some from 29 January to 5 February. Then, on 8 February, one-off preview A Day in the Life will be released in the US and drop some hints of what is to come in the new run.
So far, fans have only been offered a glimpse of what lies ahead in Westeros. A moody looking Tyrion, Jon Snow, Arya and Cersei were seen in HBO’s year-ender video, while a brief teaser showed an unidentifiable character in a rowing boat.
Season five of Game of Thrones debuts on 12 April at 9pm on HBO and on 13 April here in the UK on Sky Atlantic.
