It saw Daenerys Targaryen and Aegon Targaryen (formally known as Jon Snow) have sex as they prepared to head north and meet the White Walker threat - a climax to a romantic plot arc that has been going on all season.
Many expected it would happen before the pair discovered they are related (Daenerys is Jon's aunt) and indeed it did, though the show did not play down their relation in anyway, the scene reminding viewers of it through a Bran voice-over.
The sex scene was less explicit than others in the show, perhaps owing to the fact that the emphasis was on emotion rather than carnal desire, perhaps because the lead actors are now in a better position to say no to graphic nudity than when they were starting out their careers back in season one.
Jon and Dany's tryst still managed to titillate hordes of viewers however, the two characters being the most swooned over and shipped in the show in spite of their shared Targaryen ancestry.
Elsewhere in an explosive season finale, the Wall came down thanks to the Night King's wight dragon and Littlefinger finally got his comeuppance.
