Anthony Mackie has revealed he feared for The Falcon and the Winter Soldier Marvel series, set to arrive on Disney Plus later this month.

In the TV show, set in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Mackie will reprise the role of Sam Wilson (aka Falcon) which he first inhabited in the Captain America films.

At the end of Avengers: Endgame, it was revealed that Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) passed the mantle of “Captain America” onto Mackie’s character, who co-stars in the new spin-off with Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes (The Winter Soldier).

Speaking to Variety, Mackie opened up about his apprehension when he was signed on for his own MCU series.

“I didn’t think we could do on the television what we’d been doing on the big screen,” he said. “I didn’t want to be the face of the first Marvel franchise to fail. Like, ‘See? We cast the Black dude, and now this s*** is awful.’

“That was a huge fear of mine, and also a huge responsibility with playing a Marvel character.”

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier is the second in a planned slate of MCU series to debut on Disney Plus; the first, WandaVision, will release its final episode tomorrow (5 March).

The Falcon and the Winter Soldier arrives on Disney Plus on 19 March. UK viewers can sign up here.
