Jackie Hoffman was seen screaming "damn it" after she missed out on an Emmy to Big Little Lies star Laura Dern.

The Feud actress appeared to be drawing on the historic rivalry between Bette Davis and Joan Crawford, which is portrayed in her show, as she was pictured yelling when the Best Supporting Actress winner was named.

Presenters Riz Ahmed and Issa Rae announced the winner of the category. When Dern's name was called out, Hoffman was clearly pictured on screen yelling: "Damn it, damn it!" as Dern rose to accept the statuette.

While several publications have reported that Hoffman was "not pleased" at losing out, judging by her tweets afterwards it seems that the actress and stand-up comedian was likely joking.

After the ceremony she tweeted a series of claims about Dern with the hashtags #elitism and #soreloser.

The "loser face" is a beloved part of any awards ceremony - as the camera often catches people off-guard as they forget to look pleased for the winner.

Famous examples include Jack Nicholson and Nicholas Cage when Adrian Brody won the Best Actor Oscar in 2003,

Hoffman, who plays Mamacita - Joan Crawford's maid and confidant - on Ryan Murphy's FX series, recently told the Hollywood Reporter that she was "humbled and amazed" to be nominated for the first time.

Accepting her award, Dern made sure to emphasise the point of Big Little Lies and its themes of female friendship.

"I've been acting since I was 11 years old and I think I've worked with maybe 12 women, so I just wanted to thank the television academy for honouring our show and working with this incredible tribe of fierce women," she said.

"Thank you to Nicole and Reese's moms," she added. "For no only giving us extraordinary women but really well-read women, because that's how I'm getting parts.

"I'm sharing this with my tribe of four ladies," she continued. "I feel very proud to be a part of reflecting fierce women and mothers finding their voice."
