Your support helps us to tell the story

From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Your support makes all the difference.

Emma Thompson really isn't getting caught up in royal wedding fever.

While much of the world gears up for this weekend's nuptials of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the British Oscar-winner is remaining far more level-headed than most, flying the flag for those who really aren't fussed about, well, watching two people get married.

Thompson was refreshingly honest in her reply to a Sky News interviewer who seemed adamant to get a positive reaction from her - slightly frustrating considering she was present to talk about the BBC's new adaptation of King Lear.

“[There’s] not a single thought about it in my head to share with you, I’m so sorry,” she replied. “I haven’t even… It doesn’t occur to me actually, my son is getting married next year so I am much more sort of dealing with that but really I have nothing to say about it.”

When asked whether she wishes them well, she added before growing frustrated: “Obviously, yes, but I don't know them. Stop it, just stop it okay. Stop doing the ‘Let’s talk about the royal wedding’. Just give the poor kids a break.”

The interview was filmed in late March but was released by Sky earlier this week.

Thompson stars in King Lear alongside Anthony Hopkins who was mistaken for a homeless man while filming scenes in Stevenage last October (you can see him in character here).
