From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

Ed Balls and Samantha Cameron will be hoping to steer clear of any soggy bottoms when they take to The Great British Bake Off tent for a charity special.

The former Labour shadow chancellor and prime minister’s businesswoman wife are among 16 celebrities confirmed for a Sport Relief version of the popular BBC One show.

They will be joined by singers Will Young, Louise Redknapp, Girls Aloud’s Kimberley Walsh and former Spice Girl Geri Horner; actors Ade Edmondson, Maddy Hill and Alison Steadman; comedian Morgana Robinson; presenters Victoria Coren-Mitchell and Jason Manford; footballer Jermaine Jenas; goalkeeper David James; Sky Sports’ Chris Kamara and BBC world affairs editor John Simpson.

Cameron previously baked cupcakes, cookies and flapjacks in the Downing Street kitchen for Comic Relief 2013, and joked she “felt like Mary Berry” while visiting a group of apprentice bakers on the general election campaign trail earlier this year.

Balls meanwhile, is a genuinely amazing baker if this photo of a cake he made last summer is anything to go by:

Judges Berry and Paul Hollywood will return for the four-part series, expected to air in spring next year. Regular co-host Mel Giedroyc will be back for one episode, while Sarah Millican, Ed Byrne and Jennifer Saunders will also front one each. Sadly Sue Perkins was unable to take part due to a schedule clash.

Clips of Clare Balding and Olympic gold medal winner Denise Lewis visiting projects supported by Sport Relief will also be shown during the series. Sport Relief will run between 18 and 20 March 2016.

The big question is whether or not Ed Balls will make a cake with his own name on it.
