EastEnders will feature a storyline about historic child abuse allegations next year, a spokesperson for the soap has confirmed.

The plotline will centre on Kat Moon after a number of women come forward to claim that her late uncle Harry Slater sexually abused them.

Kat was also molested by her uncle, who raped her when she was 13. The sexual abuse resulted in the birth of her daughter Zoe, who was raised as Kat’s sister in the Slater family home in Albert Square.

In scenes to be shown in early 2015, Kat will be drawn into a police investigation when it is revealed that she may not have been Harry’s only victim.

According to The Sun, police will tell Kat that more victims have come forward over a decade after his death.

The storyline has been compared to the Jimmy Savile sex scandal that saw dozens of women come forward with claims that the late DJ sexually abused them.

The BBC has denied the comparison, stating that the storyline dates back to 2001 when it was first revealed that Kat was Zoe’s real mother.

An EastEnders spokesperson told The Independent: “EastEnders has a rich history of tackling difficult social issues and Kat’s continued story, which started in 2001, is one of these.”
