Since it began 35 years ago, the BBC soap has kept viewers glued to their respective sofas throughout Christmas week right up until New Year’s Day.
Some of the show’s most memorable moments have occurred in episodes that aired during this time – and it looks like this year is about to add some more to the list.
*Spoilers follow – you have been warned*
The storyline most people are hyped about involves the soap’s longest-standing character, Ian Beale (Adam Woodyatt), who was recently left for dead in a brutal attack. But, which fellow resident was responsible?
With a bustling list of suspects, ranging from his mum Kathy (Gillian Taylforth) to his best friend Sharon Watts (Letitia Dean), the mystery will be solved in a 50-minute Christmas Day episode when the police finally unveil the perpetrator.
But, have they caught the right person? Ian certainly hopes so considering the attacker will begin threatening another attack in the days leading up to the arrest. Events reach a deadly climax in scenes some viewers are predicting could mark the end of Ian’s time on the show.
Christmas for the Carters won’t be a particularly joyous occasion as the marriage of Mick (Danny Dyer) and Linda (Kellie Bright) reaches a new low. Mick, plagued by his history of abuse, is unable to convince Linda she has any reason to stay with him – and she finds comfort in the company of Max Branning (Jake Wood).
Their storyline is said to come to a dramatic conclusion in the New Year’s Day episode as Mick “finally confronts his greatest fears”.
Trouble is also on the horizon for Denise Fox (Diane Parish) who will be met with a blast from a horrific chapter of her past when her serial killer ex-husband Lucas (Don Gilet) returns for the first time since 2016.
He’ll be accompanied by Denise’s daughter, Chelsea (former Coronation Street star Zaraah Abrahams), who returns for the first time since Tiana Benjamin played the character in 2010.
Amid the doom and gloom, though, two unlikely residents are said to find love over Christmas, while another pair will rekindle an old romance in the unlikeliest of situations on New Year’s Day.
