From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

At 15 seconds, the teaser trailer for the first episode “Deep Breath” shows a fleeting glance at The Thick of It actor in his new role after he briefly appeared in the Christmas special The Time of the Doctor.

In the teaser, he can be heard asking Clara from inside the Tardis: “Clara, be my pal, tell me: am I a good man?” to which actress Jenna Coleman replies: “I don’t think I know who the Doctor is any more.”

The first episode of the forthcoming eighth series will premiere on Saturday 23 August on BBC One.

Capaldi takes over from Matt Smith, who played the eleventh Doctor from 2010 until his departure last year.

The 56-year-old spoke of the “privilege” of being asked to replace Smith, saying at the time: “Like The Doctor himself, I find myself in a state of utter terror and delight.

“It’s so wonderful not to keep this secret any longer, but it’s been so fantastic.”

The Scottish actor has long been a fan of the TV show, and wrote to the Radio Times aged 15 in praise of the sci-fi series in 1974.

In a letter to the magazine he wrote: “May I congratulate you on your excellent Dr Who Special. The articles, photos and especially the Terry Nation Dalek story with the twist in the tail, were excellent.

“The Dalek construction plans will have no doubt inspired many a school to build their own Daleks. Who knows, the country could be invaded by an army of school Daleks! Ah, but we’d be safe, as we’d have Dr Who to protect us!”

Capaldi will be joined by a number of new faces in series eight, including Bad Education’s Michelle Gomez, who will be playing a Gatekeeper, and Keeley Hawes, who will take on the role of an unnamed villain.
