It’s barely been two weeks but another teaser trailer for the forthcoming series of Doctor Who has been released, and this one hints at the return of the Time Lord’s greatest enemy: the Daleks and their megalomaniac creator Davros.

The short 20-second clip shows an exploding Tardis console and the Doctor getting electrocuted as he picks up a phone, while a voiceover, which sounds very much like Davros says: “I see into your soul Doctor. I see beauty, divinity, hatred.”

The BBC released a 15-second trail from “Deep Breath”, the first episode of series 8, on 27 June that offered the smallest of glimpses of Capaldi’s twelfth Doctor.

But the latest trailer is the first real hint of the new Doctor’s personality, with the implication that Peter Capaldi’s incarnation will be a more mature and darker take on the role compared to his predecessor, played by Matt Smith.

The Daleks last made an appearance on the long-running sci-fi series in last year's Christmas special “The Time of the Doctor”.

Davros last appeared on Doctor Who in 2008’s “Journey’s End” when he faced David Tennant’s tenth Doctor and his feisty companion Donna Noble, played by Catherine Tate.

The character made his first appearance back in 1975 in "Genesis of the Daleks" and is considered to be one of the Doctor’s arch enemies.

Earlier this week, it was announced that the award-winning children’s novelist and screenwriter Frank Cottrell Boyce has penned an episode for the eighth series.

He is best known for work on the Opening Ceremony for the 2012 Olympics and the film 24 Hour Party People, both of which were collaborations with direct Danny Boyle.

Show runner and producer Steven Moffat said, “Frank's script is pure magic - and everything I could have hoped for from the genius behind the Olympics opening ceremony!! Doctor Who is born anew in the mind of a genius!”

Mark Gatiss, Gareth Roberts and Steve Thompson have also written adventures for the new series.

The new series of Doctor Who will be starting on Saturday 23 August on BBC One.
