From reproductive rights to climate change to Big Tech, The Independent is on the ground when the story is developing. Whether it's investigating the financials of Elon Musk's pro-Trump PAC or producing our latest documentary, 'The A Word', which shines a light on the American women fighting for reproductive rights, we know how important it is to parse out the facts from the messaging.

At such a critical moment in US history, we need reporters on the ground. Your donation allows us to keep sending journalists to speak to both sides of the story.

The Independent is trusted by Americans across the entire political spectrum. And unlike many other quality news outlets, we choose not to lock Americans out of our reporting and analysis with paywalls. We believe quality journalism should be available to everyone, paid for by those who can afford it.

John Simm will return as villainous character the Master in the forthcoming series of Doctor Who, the BBC has confirmed.

The actor first played the role opposite David Tennant in 2007 (the Russell T. Davies era) and reprised his role for a New Year's special in 2009/10.

This will be his first time starring opposite current Time Lord Peter Capaldi who will be joined by new companion Bill Potts (Pearl Mackie).

Upon the BBC's announcement, Simm said: “I can confirm that it’s true, thanks to the power of time travel I’m back. It’s always a pleasure to work with this great team of people and I can’t wait for you all to see what the Master gets up to in the next series. “

Writer Steven Moffat also confirmed that Green Wing actor Michelle Gomez, who plays a regenerated incarnation of the same character named Missy, will be returning to star opposite Simm in what is described as “...a solo personality clash.”

The new series of Doctor Who - which will be Capaldi's last - is set to debut on Saturday 15 April at 7.20pm on BBC One.
